CHAPTER 44

NEGOTIATING WITH THE GUILD

The teddy bear began to twitch as it tried in vain to push itself off of the ground. Stuffing leaked like blood from a tear in its abdomen. The familiar voice of the goddess did not sound pleased at all. “What have you done to my construct?”

“It sort of got buried,” I replied, shrugging. “Can we fix it or do I need to make another? Actually, that’s not why I need you. I need a manasoul for the windows and you promised to show me how to make one.”

Iris stopped attempting to move the bear, opting instead to let Stitch lay there while she instructed me. “Forget about the doll for the moment. Once you make my shrine, I will be able to manifest my presence directly. To create a manasoul, you are going to need a vessel capable of holding mana. Go into town and seek a vendor that sells gemstones. Trust your inner voice and choose only the highest quality. As you can see from the remains of Stitch, the guild provided you with a low-grade manasoul. Under my tutelage, you will craft premium items.”

“What kind of gemstones am I looking for?” I asked, taking the gems from the dungeon out and laying them on the ground in front of Stitch. “Will any of these work?”

“Those are already infused with a special type of mana,” Iris explained while more stuffing leaked on the floor. “They are not suitable to become manasouls. Worry not as there are several recipes in my book that will make good use of them. For manasouls, it will be best to make them in non-enchanted vessels.”

I nodded, pulling on clothes as I prepared for the day’s quest. “Should I get anything else? Is there anything specific you want me to make today?”

Stitch twitched. “It is unlikely that you will finish the manasouls today, let alone my shrine. Focus your assets on the task at hand and only summon me when you are prepared to begin crafting. I am not sure how long this construct is going to last so you need to only bring me out for instructions until my shrine is complete.”

When Stitch stopped moving, I took that as I sign that the goddess was done and placed it back in my bag. Pi decided to give me a list of things to do as I made the hike toward the market.

Things to do today:

Visit Isabelle

Purchase manasoul supplies

Eat something

You’re so thoughtful, Pi.

You require energy if you wish to expend mana.

Do manasouls require a lot of mana?

You will need mana both to create the shell as well as to fill it. Food provides a buff to mana regeneration. I suggest you also purchase snacks.

With that in mind, I decided to begin the day by surprising Isa. When I arrived at the guild, Catherine waved frantically at me. I walked past the line to get to her, earning a few grumbles from adventurers in the line. “Hey, Catherine, what’s up?”
